The apparatus of an edition of Shakespeare is designed to shape and facilitate the reader’s experience without intruding upon his or her engagement with the text. An apparatus will form an implicit claim for the scholarly status of an edition and indicate the anticipated level of the reader. Decisions about such matters as what works to include, in what order, how much introductory material, what kind of notes, all have an effect in conveying the nature of the text. From the First Folio (1623) into the nineteenth century editions looked much alike, but radical change came with the Oxford Shakespeare in 1986. Now the advent of the internet has allowed certain poststructuralist ideas to manifest themselves, and recent editions are once again changing.
